AC in Holiday Summer Houses — A Practical Guide

Holiday summer houses are growing in popularity as retreats for relaxation and remote work. More and more owners are choosing to install air conditioning so they can enjoy their properties comfortably throughout the summer season. In this article, we share what to consider when choosing and installing AC in a summer house.

The first step is correctly calculating your cooling requirements. Timber houses have different insulating properties compared to brick buildings — wood heats up faster but also loses heat more quickly. As a rough guide, allow approximately 100-120 BTU per square metre for a well-insulated timber cabin. For a 40 m2 cottage, you would need an AC unit with approximately 4-5 kW capacity.

The choice between a portable AC unit and a split system is a common dilemma for summer house owners. A portable unit is cheaper to buy and requires no installation, but it is noisier, less energy-efficient and requires hot air to be vented outside through a window. A split system is quieter, more efficient and more aesthetically pleasing, but requires professional installation.

When installing AC in a timber house, pay particular attention to the mounting of the indoor unit. Wooden walls may not have sufficient load-bearing capacity — in such cases, we use special mounting frames that distribute the load across a larger area. The outdoor unit is best placed on a concrete platform or a wooden base protected against moisture.

Preparing the AC for winter is a crucial step that many owners overlook. If the cabin is not heated during the winter season, you should arrange for the installation to be professionally winterised. This includes draining condensate from the system, covering the outdoor unit with a protective cover and disconnecting the power supply. Skipping these steps can lead to damage to the compressor and heat exchanger.

Installation costs for AC in a summer house are comparable to apartment installations — from approximately PLN 1,200 net for a standard setup. However, you should factor in additional costs such as running appropriate electrical wiring or preparing a foundation for the outdoor unit. For cabins far from the power grid, a generator may be necessary.
