The Daikin Ururu Sarara in the 3.5 kW variant, that is the FTXZ35NV1B set with the RXZ35NV1B outdoor unit, is an air conditioner from an entirely different category than typical wall-mounted models. The manufacturer describes it as a full climate-control system: besides heating and cooling it humidifies the air, dries it and brings in fresh air from outside. The name comes from Japanese: Ururu means humidifying and Sarara means dehumidifying. It is a design for someone who treats the air at home as a topic of its own, not only the temperature on the thermostat.

The figures are impressive. The SEER is 9.0 and the SCOP is 5.73, both with an A+++ class. The cooling output is 3.5 kW (from 0.6 to 5.3 kW), and the heating output is as much as 5.0 kW, with a range from 0.6 to 9.0 kW. The indoor unit runs between 19 and 42 dB, and the outdoor unit is rated at 48 dB. The extensive functions come with their own size: the casing is 798 mm wide, 372 mm deep and 295 mm high, and it weighs 15 kg.

Added to that is control from the Onecta app and by voice through Alexa or Google Home, a motion sensor with three zones and a filter that cleans itself. The manufacturer also stresses the awards for its design. We quote the installed price after a free assessment.

Overview and positioning

The Ururu Sarara is a category of its own in the Daikin range. A typical wall-mounted air conditioner changes the temperature and that is the end of it. Here the manufacturer combines five ways of treating the air in one system: heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying and ventilation. According to Daikin it is the only climate-control system on the market with such a scope. We treat this as the manufacturer's description, not our own comparison with specific units from other brands. For the customer it means a different way of thinking about the purchase: you choose not only an output and an energy class, but a whole set of functions that affect how you breathe in the flat all year round. In that view a larger unit and a more involved installation are the natural price of the extra capabilities.

The set consists of the indoor unit FTXZ35NV1B and the outdoor unit RXZ35NV1B. The refrigerant is R32. The 3.5 kW variant works with a cooling output from 0.6 to 5.3 kW and a heating output from 0.6 to 9.0 kW, which gives a very wide modulation range. Such a range lets the system hold a small load without the compressor constantly switching on and off. The nominal cooling output is 3.5 kW and the heating output 5.0 kW. That gives a clear heating advantage over cooling, a feature appreciated by people planning to support their heating in the colder months.

Who is this model for? For a customer in Warsaw who lives in a tight, modern flat, complains about dry air in winter and wants to cool in summer without over-drying. If you are looking for the simplest solution for a bedroom, this is a solution from a higher shelf, with a larger size and a more demanding installation. We also say responsibly that not every flat needs such functions. If the air in your home is not dry and the ventilation works properly, part of this model's capability will stay unused, so it is worth discussing your real needs with us beforehand.

Cooling and heating technology

The seasonal parameters are a SEER of 9.0 in cooling and a SCOP of 5.73 in heating, in both cases class A+++. In practice this means low energy use for every kilowatt of heat or cold delivered, especially in heating mode, in which the unit works like an air-to-air heat pump. It results from the way an inverter compressor works, adjusting its speed to need instead of cycling at full power. For the user it means a steady temperature and smaller swings of comfort during the day.

The nominal heating output is 5.0 kW and the maximum is 9.0 kW. That is considerably more than the 3.5 kW cooling output, so on a cool day the unit has a reserve for quickly warming the flat. The operating range in heating reaches from -20 to 18 °C (the manufacturer gives it on the wet-bulb scale), and in cooling from -10 to 43 °C. At low outdoor temperatures heating output naturally falls. We treat the air conditioner as an important supplement to your heating, not a complete replacement in extreme conditions.

The manufacturer points to energy saving in standby mode and to a 3D airflow that is meant to reach every corner of the room. The motion sensor with three zones detects where someone is and, according to the manufacturer's description, helps direct the airflow. We treat these as claims; the result depends on the layout of the room. It is worth remembering when planning the season: the sensor and airflow direction settings can be matched to where you spend most of your time, for example at the desk or on the sofa. We show this during the handover after installation.

Comfort and air quality

This is the main axis of the model. Humidifying reduces the feeling of dry air in winter, dehumidifying helps on damp days, and ventilation brings in fresh air from outside, which ordinary wall-mounted air conditioners do not do. On the manufacturer's page the whole design is described as 5 air-treatment techniques in one unit. For people sensitive to dry air this is an interesting combination, because functions that usually require separate devices are gathered in one casing. Their scope of action, however, depends on the conditions in the room and has to be judged on site.

The self-cleaning filter is brushed automatically, and the collected dust ends up in a box inside the unit, which can be emptied easily. This saves time on upkeep, although it does not exempt you from periodic checks of the whole installation. The box simply has to be emptied from time to time. The filter cleans itself, so you do not have to take it out and wash it by hand every day.

Quiet operation is another advantage. The indoor unit's noise level ranges from 19 to 42 dB and the outdoor unit's is 48 dB. The lowest value, 19 dB, is almost inaudible in a bedroom, whereas at a high speed 42 dB is already clearly audible. For sleeping we choose the quietest mode. This way the unit can be left on overnight without fear that it will get in the way of falling asleep, as long as you choose suitable settings.

Controls and Wi-Fi

The manufacturer's description lists full control from anywhere: the Onecta app and voice control through Alexa or Google Home. The app is meant to keep the unit under control wherever you are. For everyday use an intuitive remote is available as well. For most household members the most convenient is a combination of both ways: the remote for daily changes and the app for switching on remotely before coming home. Remote control makes particular sense with a unit of this range of functions, because it lets you check and change humidifying or ventilation without walking up to the unit.

The description does not say exactly what element a network connection requires, and we do not claim that a Wi-Fi module or adapter is in the set. Before ordering we check in the set documentation whether an additional element is needed for the app to work, and include it in the quote. That way no extra cost will surprise you after installation.

If the app does not matter to you, the unit still works with the remote. The handover after installation covers both paths. We also show how to use humidifying and ventilation, because these are the functions that distinguish this model from ordinary air conditioners, and it is worth knowing when to use them. We also make sure that in the first days of use the settings are matched to your habits, and if you have questions you can come back to us for help with configuration.

Design and build

The indoor unit is white and measures 798 mm wide, 372 mm deep and 295 mm high. It weighs 15 kg. That is much more than in typical wall-mounted air conditioners, because the humidifying and ventilation systems fit inside the casing. When choosing the wall we take into account the depth of 372 mm and the weight, and we select the bracket to suit the type of masonry. Before ordering we ask for a photo of the wall and information on whether there is room nearby for the power supply and the condensate outlet.

The manufacturer describes the design as award-winning and the indoor unit as a technologically advanced wall unit. We will not dwell on it: that is the manufacturer's view, and everyone will judge the looks in their own way. The body is clearly larger than in models from lower shelves, so it is worth seeing it in photos and in the room. If aesthetics matter to you as much as functions, take a look at the model in person or in a large photo, not only in a catalogue.

The outdoor unit, according to Daikin, fits on a roof, a wall or in a garden, which gives flexibility of installation. The R32 refrigerant is common in new air conditioners. We take care over neat routing of the lines and the choice of position, so that the set does not get in the way either in the flat or outside. If in doubt, we will advise a place that reconciles appearance with technical requirements.

Installation and service

The installation scope includes: mounting the indoor and outdoor units, up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate routes, passing through the wall and neat routing of the installation. We evacuate the system and check it for leaks, charge it with refrigerant and start the unit. We check the operating parameters, configure the controls, walk you through operation and hand over the warranty documents. Because of the weight of 15 kg and the extensive construction of the indoor unit, installation usually takes longer than with lighter models, which we take into account when agreeing the date.

The maximum installation length according to the manufacturer is 10 m, which is worth bearing in mind when planning the position of the outdoor unit. Extra charges may result from a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, chasing, a condensate pump or work from a lift platform. We discuss them before the work, and the scope is agreed at the free assessment. If the position of the outdoor unit is further away than that limit, we will discuss alternatives before the quote, so that you do not choose a unit that cannot be installed properly.

After installation remember to empty the dust box, to clean the elements recommended by the manufacturer and to arrange an annual inspection. An inspection before the season lets us check the condensate drain, the tightness of the system and the state of the exchangers. With regular care you will keep good air quality and the efficiency of the unit for many seasons.

Who this model is for — summary

Choose the Daikin Ururu Sarara 3.5 kW if you want cooling, heating, humidifying, dehumidifying and ventilation in one unit, together with a very high seasonal efficiency of A+++. It is a proposition for people who value the quality of the air at home more than the lowest purchase bill. It will work in a modern, tight flat that is dry in winter, and where limiting noise in the bedroom counts.

Consider a simpler model if you need a compact, light unit, a short and inexpensive installation, or do not care about humidifying. This model is 372 mm deep and weighs 15 kg, and the maximum pipe run is 10 m. Consider another model too if the wall intended for the indoor unit is narrow or weak. Before you decide, we will assess together whether the extra functions will be useful in your daily life.
