The Haier Expert Plus 3.5 kW (indoor unit AS35XCAHRA, outdoor unit 1U35S2SM1FA-2) is an air conditioner in which the cleanliness of the unit matters as much as the cooling itself. The manufacturer built three mechanisms around it: the UV-C PRO sterilising lamp, the Self Clean function and heating of the heat exchanger to 56 °C in the 56°C Steri Clean programme. Add figures that set this variant apart from many others: SEER 8.5 and an A+++ class in cooling, and an operating range reaching -20 °C.

Technical data from the Haier product card: cooling capacity 3.5 kW (from 1.0 to 4.0 kW), heating capacity 4.2 kW (from 1.0 to 5.2 kW), SCOP 4.75 with an A++ class in heating, an indoor sound pressure level from 17 to 40 dB(A) and 49 dB(A) for the outdoor unit. The indoor unit is 895 mm wide, 313 mm high and 236 mm deep and weighs 11.3 kg. The refrigerant is R32.

The casing is designed so that the drain pan, the fan and its motor are easy to reach, and the manufacturer describes the model's design as a Red Dot Design Award winner. On this page we explain what that means for someone choosing an air conditioner for a Warsaw flat who wants to understand what they are paying for. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. We aim to base the description on the numbers in the product card, not on advertising slogans.

Overview and positioning

In our catalogue the Expert Plus is a premium model chosen above all for hygiene and seasonal efficiency. Haier describes it as an advanced solution that joins a modern look with high cooling performance and an air-cleaning system. The series is available in both SPLIT and MULTI SPLIT systems, and our variant is a classic one-to-one set with the AS35XCAHRA indoor unit and the 1U35S2SM1FA-2 outdoor unit.

In the manufacturer's table the 3.5 kW variant stands beside 2.5 kW and 5.0 kW versions. The 3.5 kW version has an A+++ class in cooling and the 5.0 kW version only A++, so within this series our variant has a better cooling index than the largest one. The choice of capacity depends on the room, however, not on the table: we discuss it during a free visit, measuring the room and checking sun exposure.

The product card refers to the white matt version (White Matt). The manufacturer offers the series in several colours, but this description covers only the white variant that we have in the catalogue.

Who do we usually look for such a model for? People who live in a block with windows facing the street, where dust gathers quickly in the flat, or families in which someone reacts sensitively to smells and humidity. Then the point is not just to cool the room, but to make sure the unit does not turn into a source of unpleasant air after a few seasons.

Cooling and heating technology

Efficiency is this model's strong side. In cooling the SEER is 8.5, which gives an A+++ class, and in heating the SCOP is 4.75 with an A++ class. The compressor is a rotary type, and the amount of refrigerant is controlled by an electronic expansion valve.

The operating range is wide. Cooling works at outdoor temperatures from -20 to 43 °C, and heating from -20 to 24 °C. The lower limit of -20 °C in both modes is a considerable advantage: the unit suits not only heat waves but also transitional days and chilly mornings when the flat needs a top-up of warmth. The heating output of 4.2 kW can rise to 5.2 kW and, at low load, fall to 1.0 kW. In winter, remember too that at low outdoor temperatures the compressor runs longer, so the outdoor unit should have free air access and should not stand buried in snow or leaves.

The Coanda Plus function is characteristic. In cooling the airflow is directed upwards, so cold air does not hit the user directly but sinks naturally and cools the room evenly. In heating the stream goes towards the floor, from where the warmth rises and circulates around the whole interior. The Turbo Cooling mode serves for quick cooling.

The SEER 8.5 and SCOP 4.75 values come from the product card and describe performance under standard conditions, not in your flat. Actual energy use depends on insulation, sun exposure and how often the unit runs, so we promise no savings in zloty. The indices do let you compare this model with others on the same common scale.

Comfort and air quality

On hygiene the Expert Plus has the most to say. UV-C PRO sterilisation uses a built-in LED lamp that emits UV-C and VUV radiation. The manufacturer writes that this combination can deactivate airborne contaminants, and that the VUV band creates reactive oxygen species that can inhibit the growth of bacteria. These are the manufacturer's claims; at home, regular filter cleaning remains the most important thing.

Self Clean freezes humid air on the evaporator surface and washes the dirt away as it thaws. The 56°C Steri Clean programme heats the heat exchanger to 56 °C for 30 minutes, which according to the manufacturer effectively kills bacteria and viruses; the programme is started from the app. Add the mechanical filter, which catches pollen and dust and regains its properties once washed. Since Steri Clean needs the app, before you plan regular thermal cleaning make sure the network connection works and the app is set up.

The indoor unit's sound level lies between 17 and 40 dB(A) depending on the fan speed. The outdoor unit is rated at 49 dB(A). In DRY mode the air conditioner adjusts the fan speed to the difference between the set and the actual temperature, to reach the right level of dehumidification. That helps on muggy days when the temperature is bearable but the humidity is a nuisance.

If someone asks whether the UV-C lamp replaces cleaning, the answer is no. The manufacturer describes it as a function that can increase the air-disinfection capability, but the filter still collects dust and the evaporator still collects deposits. So a sensible plan combines three things: Haier's automatic programmes, washing the filter every few weeks in season and an annual inspection.

Controls and Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is not an add-on to buy here: the manufacturer's equipment list shows the Wi-Fi module as standard, and control is through the hOn app. In it you set all the air conditioner's functions, configure several devices and plan an operating schedule, for example a weekly one. That lets you switch on cooling before you get home from work.

The set includes a wireless remote, YR-HQ or YR-HJ, which has an extra role: the I FEEL sensor sits in it. The air conditioner measures the temperature where the remote lies, so the set value applies to the place where you sit, not to the area around the unit under the ceiling. The card also lists optional wired controllers.

The ECO sensor detects a person's presence and movement and directs the airflow so that it does not fall directly on the user; when it detects absence it goes into a rest state and wastes no energy. These are functions worth enabling at the start and then only adjusting. The ECO sensor is useful in a bedroom, where nobody wants to change settings at night, and in a room that is empty for most of the day.

What does this look like in practice? In the morning you set a weekday schedule in hOn, in the evening you start cooling remotely, and once in a while you launch the 56°C Steri Clean programme from the app when the flat has been unused. If you do not want the app, the remote is enough. The Turbo Cooling mode is meant for quickly cooling an overheated room, so it comes in handy after a holiday or after a whole day of sun heating the flat.

Design and build

The casing is white and matt. The manufacturer describes it as minimalist, with a stark, almost ascetic character, and its appearance won the Red Dot Design Award. The indoor unit measures 895 mm wide, 313 mm high and 236 mm deep and weighs 11.3 kg. Such a casing goes well with light walls and plain furniture; consider that if you are furnishing in a minimalist style.

Minimalism also has a practical side. The construction lets you slide out the unit's parts easily, which gives access to the drain pan, the fan and the fan motor. That makes cleaning and service simpler, and it affects the quality of the airflow. For a user who orders an inspection once a year, it means a smoother job for the technician.

With a construction like this, remember about space: the unit is almost 90 cm wide, so when choosing a wall it is worth leaving some room at the sides. We settle the exact place during the audit.

The matt finish has one more advantage that shows after months: fingerprints and wipe marks are less visible than on gloss. A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough for washing the casing, and the inner parts are cleaned after sliding them out, as the manufacturer describes.

Installation and service

Installation by LeoKlima covers mounting the indoor and outdoor units and running up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate routing. We make the wall passage and lay the installation neatly, then evacuate the system and test it for tightness, charge it with refrigerant and start the air conditioner. Next we check the operating parameters, configure the controls, including the connection to the app, and hand over the warranty documents together with instruction on how to use the unit.

The manufacturer allows a maximum installation length of 20 m. We agree the scope of work during a free audit. Possible surcharges, which we discuss before the work, are a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, chasing walls, a condensate pump and work from a lift platform.

Everyday use is simple: you wash the mechanical filter under water, and the Self Clean and Steri Clean functions limit deposits on the heat exchanger. Even so, we recommend an inspection once a year. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. At handover we show where the parts slide out for cleaning and how to remove the filter, so you do not have to look for it in the manual.

Before ordering it is worth working out how much space the pipe route needs from the indoor to the outdoor unit and whether it fits within the 20 m limit. In flats it is usually a short stretch, and we discuss longer routes in advance, together with surcharges, so the result is clear before the work.

Who this model is for — summary

We recommend the Expert Plus to people who want a top-shelf air conditioner for hygiene and efficiency: SEER 8.5, an A+++ class in cooling, the UV-C PRO lamp and the heat-exchanger heating programme. It suits families with children or allergy sufferers who know that the cleanliness of the unit's interior affects what they breathe, although we promise no medical effects. If you also want to run the whole home from a phone, the hOn app does that across many devices at once.

It also makes sense for those who plan to use the air conditioner for heating outside the depth of winter: operation down to -20 °C and 4.2 kW heating output are a reasonable reserve for autumn and spring. Do not treat it as the flat's only source of heat, however, without discussing that with us.

We quote the installed price after a free assessment. During the visit we measure the room, show where the units can go and describe what is in scope and what might need a surcharge.

It is not the best choice for someone seeking the quietest possible unit at any cost: 17 dB(A) in quiet mode is a good result, but the model is marketed on hygiene and efficiency, not on record silence. Look at other models in our catalogue if quiet in the bedroom is your overriding concern.
