The Haier Jade Plus 3.5 kW is an air conditioner that the manufacturer describes as an air conditioner and an air purifier in one device. The whole series is built around that idea: an electrostatic IFD filter mesh, the Self Clean function, the 56°C Steri Clean mode and an antibacterial coating with silver nanoparticles on the parts of the air duct. If your main question is not "how fast will it cool" but "what will I be breathing after several seasons of operation", this model answers exactly that one. The manufacturer notes that the series is also available as Multi Split, but we describe the single version: one indoor and one outdoor unit with a capacity of 3.5 kW.

The technical data of the 3.5 kW variant are solid and well documented in the product sheet. Nominal cooling capacity is 3.5 kW (from 1.0 to 4.0 kW) and heating capacity 4.2 kW (from 1.3 to 5.8 kW). Seasonal efficiency is SEER 8.75 and SCOP 5.1, with energy class A+++ in both cooling and heating. The indoor unit weighs 12 kg, measures 923 × 320 × 215 mm and has a sound pressure level between 16 and 37 dB(A). The outdoor unit reaches 49 dB(A). The unit codes are AS35S2SJ1FA-3 indoors and 1U35MECFRA-3 outdoors, so they are easy to find in the manufacturer's documents.

Wi-Fi control is standard and is operated through the hOn app. The manufacturer lists a Wi-Fi module in the equipment together with the remote and the units. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. Further on we describe how the hygiene mechanisms work, how the unit performs in winter and whether this model is a good choice for your flat. We state only what the product sheet confirms, and leave the remaining questions for the free assessment.

Overview and positioning

In our catalogue the Haier Jade Plus belongs to the premium models, but not because it has the most spectacular extras. Its distinguishing feature is a consistent approach to hygiene: the manufacturer combines a filter, cleaning mechanisms and an antibacterial coating into one coherent package. The slogan "air purifier and air conditioner 2 in 1" sounds like marketing, but behind it stand concrete solutions that can be described and checked. For a client in Warsaw who lives by a busy street and airs the flat with caution, such a set can be a weightier argument than the look of the casing.

It is worth saying at once what this model is and what it is not. It is a wall-mounted air conditioner with inverter technology, a rotary compressor and R32 refrigerant, not a medical device or a stand-alone purifier. The IFD filter and cleaning functions reduce the amount of impurities in the air and in the unit itself, but they do not replace airing, cleaning or periodic servicing.

The Jade Plus series comes in several capacities, and we describe the 3.5 kW variant, a solution for a bedroom, a living room or a medium-sized study. This size is usually enough in rooms of that scale, but we always confirm it at the free assessment, because demand is affected by sun exposure, room height and the number of people. The manufacturer also offers extra control accessories for this series, but in a typical flat the standard equipment is enough.

Cooling and heating technology

Inverter technology keeps the temperature steady without constantly switching the compressor on and off. Cooling capacity varies from 1.0 to 4.0 kW around a nominal 3.5 kW, and heating capacity from 1.3 to 5.8 kW around a nominal 4.2 kW. The PID control system reaches the set temperature faster and more accurately, reacting to differences of about 0.1°C, and the DC motor is meant to work more economically and quietly than older types. As a result the unit reacts smoothly to changes in load: when the room warms up it raises output, and once the temperature is reached it calmly maintains it.

The seasonal parameters are SEER 8.75 in cooling and SCOP 5.1 in heating, and both energy classes are A+++. The operating range in cooling reaches from -10 to 43°C outdoor temperature, and in heating from -20 to 24°C. For a Warsaw winter this matters: the heat pump is not limited to autumn and spring, but according to the manufacturer's data also works in frosts down to -20°C. The manufacturer also describes intelligent defrosting, which is meant to keep comfort in difficult weather. Precise temperature setting to 0.5°C helps use less energy.

Further modes include Turbo Cooling, which shortens cooling time, and the Warm Start function: in heating the unit does not blow cold air but waits for it to warm up, or runs at a very low speed. The 3-minute protection stops the compressor from restarting too often, and the dehumidifying mode automatically matches fan speed to the difference between the set temperature and the temperature in the room. Strong airflow, thanks to an improved fan and duct, is according to the manufacturer up to 25% stronger, which speeds up the distribution of warmth and cool around the room.

Comfort and air quality

This is where the Jade Plus shows its strongest side. The IFD filter mesh has 7000 holes and works electrostatically: with Self Purify switched on, it generates a charge that attracts dust and other pollutants. The filter module can be removed easily and reused after washing. The manufacturer states that purification efficiency measured by CADR reaches up to 300 m³/h and compares it with professional air purifiers; this is a value declared by the manufacturer. The solution makes particular sense in a room where dust and pollen are a problem, for instance in a flat with a balcony or near a busy street.

The second pillar is the cleanliness of the unit itself. Self Clean uses humid air to freeze the surface of the evaporator and flushes away impurities during thawing. The 56°C Steri Clean mode heats the heat exchanger to 56°C for 30 minutes to kill bacteria and viruses; according to the manufacturer it is available from the app. Self Hygiene is an antibacterial coating with silver nanoparticles on the air duct parts, meant to prevent mould and bacteria from developing. All of these elements work together, and the effect is meant to be better quality air from the outlet, although the process requires regular maintenance.

For sleep comfort there are the Comfort Sleep mode and the Quiet mode. The I FEEL function reads the temperature around the user from a sensor in the remote, so the unit aims for the set value where you sit, not only next to the indoor unit. The ECO sensor detects human presence and movement, directs the airflow so that it does not fall directly on the person, and when nobody is in the room it switches to standby. The Comfort Sleep mode keeps the unit's noise as low as possible and adjusts the temperature for rest, which works well in a bedroom.

Controls and Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi control is standard, and the manufacturer's description names the hOn app. With it you can switch on cooling before you return home, change settings and create operating schedules, for example weekly ones. The app also allows configuring several units, which is handy if several air conditioners work in one flat. Some hygiene functions, including 56°C Steri Clean, are available precisely from the app.

Day to day, however, you will mostly reach for the wireless remote, which is part of the standard equipment and offers five fan speeds: strong, medium, weak, quiet and automatic. You can set the temperature to within 0.5°C, and the louvres can direct airflow from left to right and from top to bottom, which the manufacturer calls 3D airflow. The remote and the Wi-Fi module are listed in the equipment by the manufacturer; we show how to configure both after installation.

The manufacturer also lists optional accessories: wired control and an ON-OFF card, used mostly in hotels and commercial buildings. In a flat they will rarely be needed, but it is good to know the option exists. In a typical flat the remote and the app are enough, and extra accessories are ordered only when you really need them. The LED display shows the operating state and is invisible when the air conditioner is off, so it does not glow in the bedroom.

Design and build

The indoor unit is white, 923 mm wide, 320 mm high and 215 mm deep, and weighs 12 kg. The dimensions are not particularly small, so when planning the place on the wall we leave appropriate clearance above the unit and at the sides. A stepper motor adjusts the horizontal louvres vertically, so airflow is wider; after switching off the louvres close automatically and the LED display is invisible. The manufacturer also tested the durability of the control board in harsh conditions and presents it as evidence of the electronics' endurance.

The construction has also been thought through from the service point of view. A removable cover makes it easier for the installer to connect pipes and cables, the pipes can be routed to the right or to the left, and self-diagnosis shows an error code on the indoor unit. The fan motor is easily accessible, which according to the manufacturer is meant to enable quick replacement of parts, should it ever be needed. The integrated construction of the outdoor unit, combining the base, drip tray and frame, is meant to reduce vibration.

The outdoor unit has a sound pressure level of 49 dB(A), which we take seriously when choosing where to place it. A good location depends on neighbours, bedroom windows and service access. It is also worth remembering the valve cover, which covers the connection block and the shut-off valve, providing safety and a tidy appearance. Together this adds up to a unit that is practical to live with, not only good-looking in a photograph.

Installation and service

Installing the Haier Jade Plus starts with hanging the indoor unit and placing the outdoor one. We then run up to several metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate lines, make the passage through the wall and arrange the installation neatly. Next we pull a vacuum, check the tightness of the system, charge it with refrigerant and start the unit. At the free assessment we look at the wall, the place for the outdoor unit and the route, and only then settle the scope of work.

The manufacturer gives a maximum installation length of 20 m, but in flats such a long route is rarely needed. A longer route usually means an extra charge, which we discuss before the work. After start-up we check the operating parameters, configure the controls, including helping to connect the unit to the hOn app, and at the end we show you how to operate it and hand over the warranty documents. This gives you a clear picture of what installation covers before you agree to it.

Other possible extra charges are drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, chasing walls, a condensate pump and work from a lift platform. In use, the most important things are regular washing of the IFD filter module and the filters, and an annual inspection, because even the best automatic cleaning modes will not replace a check of tightness and the condition of the heat exchangers. A well-maintained air conditioner runs more quietly and economically, so regular inspection pays back in electricity bills.

Who this model is for — summary

The Haier Jade Plus 3.5 kW is for people who treat air cleanliness as a reason to buy an air conditioner. It will suit allergy sufferers, flats with small children and places where the unit runs all year round, because then the automatic hygiene mechanisms genuinely relieve the user. Operation from 16 dB(A) and heating down to -20°C further speak for it in a bedroom and in a Warsaw winter. It is also a sensible choice for families who want to use air conditioning throughout the year, because the heating operating range reaches -20°C.

Consider another model if you are looking for the lowest possible price or a simple unit without extra functions. Then the IFD filter and the hygiene modes will be an unnecessary extra for you. Remember also that elaborate hygiene does not remove the need for maintenance: the filter must be washed and inspections done regularly. For people who expect the shortest possible list of functions there are simpler models in our catalogue, which we are glad to show.

If you want to check whether this air conditioner fits your room, we will come for a free assessment, measure the room and choose the installation spot. We will also check that the installation route will not exceed 20 m, which is the limit given by the manufacturer. We quote the installed price after a free assessment, and we discuss any extra charges before the work begins.
