For many people the problem with air conditioning is not a lack of cold, but a stream of chilled air aimed straight at the back of the neck. The Midea BreezelessE answers that with the design of its outlet: the Twinflap panel has 5013 micro-holes that turn a strong airflow into thousands of gentle streams. The set is made up of the MSCB1BU-12HRFN8-ME indoor unit and the MOX103-12HFN8-ME outdoor unit. Cooling capacity is 3.6 kW (from 1.4 to 4.3 kW), heating capacity is 3.8 kW (from 1.1 to 4.4 kW), and the refrigerant is R32.

The manufacturer states class A++ for cooling and A+ for heating, with a SEER of 7.1 and a SCOP of 4.2. These are solid values, though lower than in the most economical models on the market; BreezelessE bets on thermal comfort and technology rather than on an efficiency record. The indoor unit runs from 20 to 37.5 dB(A), so at night it does not dominate a bedroom.

Inside, the unit carries Air Magic+ with negative ions, a four-stage i-Clean function, an intelligent sleep curve and control through the Midea SmartHome app. We quote the installed price after a free assessment, and during the visit we check whether the layout of the room lets you make full use of the gentle airflow, for example whether the bed or the desk sits right on the axis of the stream.

Overview and positioning

In our catalogue the Midea BreezelessE sits among the premium models, but not because of record efficiency. What sets it apart is the way it delivers cold. The series is designed as a draught-free air conditioner, which for many people matters more than another hundredth on the seasonal figure. If your neck aches after a few hours in an air-conditioned office, or you dislike sleeping with the noise of moving air, this is the feature that will be your main argument.

The figures for the 3.6 kW variant: cooling capacity 3.6 kW with a modulation range from 1.4 to 4.3 kW, heating capacity 3.8 kW with a range from 1.1 to 4.4 kW. The seasonal figures are SEER 7.1 (class A++) and SCOP 4.2 (class A+). The manufacturer describes the series as draught-free, and we cover the individual functions below in the order in which they affect daily life: first the airflow, then the speed of cooling, and finally energy saving and hygiene.

It is worth saying at once what the available data does not contain. The manufacturer does not give, in this specification, the noise of the outdoor unit or the maximum installation length, so we enter no numbers here and do not guess. We discuss both points concretely during the free assessment, based on the technical documentation supplied with the unit and the conditions on your facade. That way you do not get promises built on guesswork, only information that can be checked. We believe that when choosing an air conditioner for a flat it is better to hear an honest "we do not know, we will check" than a nice-sounding but unconfirmed assurance. We take the same approach with every other model in the range.

Cooling and heating technology

Cool Flash Plus technology is meant to lower the temperature of the whole room by 6.3 degrees within 10 minutes; this is manufacturer data obtained under test conditions, so in your living room the result will depend on volume and sun exposure. On the heating side, Heat Flash raises the temperature by 10.4 degrees in 10 minutes and, according to the manufacturer, also works at low outdoor temperatures. The outdoor unit operates from -15 to 50 °C in cooling and from -20 to 24 °C in heating.

Everything is governed by a learning algorithm: every 30 seconds it detects changes in the surroundings and, as the manufacturer states, can save up to 20% more energy. That is not a guarantee of a specific sum on your bill, because a lot depends on the habits of the household, but the mechanism makes sense since the unit reacts to real conditions rather than fixed settings. In the app you will find an energy-saving report that suggests how to reduce consumption.

In heating it pays to stay realistic. As the outdoor temperature approaches the lower end of the range, the output of an air-to-air heat pump drops, and a SCOP of 4.2 refers to an average season, not to the coldest days. For that reason we suggest BreezelessE as transitional and supplementary heating, not as the only source of warmth over the entire winter. In autumn and spring, when radiators are not yet on or have already been switched off, a quick rise in room temperature is the most noticeable benefit of this function. Remember too that for heating the manufacturer gives an upper outdoor limit of 24 °C, so the unit is not intended for topping up heat on warm days.

Comfort and air quality

The core of comfort is the airflow. The Twinflap design with 5013 micro-holes breaks a strong stream into thousands of gentle streams, which makes cooling, in the manufacturer's words, exceptionally mild. In practice the air mixes in the room instead of hitting a single spot. That is most useful in a bedroom and in a child's room, where we do not want to aim a cold stream at the bed.

The second element is the intelligent sleep curve, which adjusts the temperature automatically at night. You do not have to reach for the remote at midnight to raise the setpoint when it gets cooler. The indoor unit's noise level lies between 20 and 37.5 dB(A), from very quiet operation to clearly audible airflow at the highest speed. On low speeds this is a level that in a bedroom usually stops being noticeable.

Air quality is supported by Air Magic+, which uses negative ions to reduce bacteria. In addition, the four-stage i-Clean function cleans the heat exchanger at a temperature of up to 56 degrees, which helps keep the inside of the unit in better condition between services. It does not, however, replace regular filter cleaning and periodic servicing; the function limits deposits but does not release you from the usual upkeep. The manufacturer does not call it a filter or a steriliser, so we see it as extra hygiene for the heat exchanger and not as a guarantee of perfectly clean air. For allergy sufferers it is still a sensible addition, but regular cleaning and airing of the room are what count, especially in the pollen season and when more people are sleeping or spending time in the flat.

Controls and Wi-Fi

The manufacturer's description mentions the Midea SmartHome app, in which you will find the energy-saving report. Because the description says nothing about a Wi-Fi module in the box, we do not claim that one is included with the unit. Whether you will need to buy an adapter, and how pairing with the app works for your particular variant, we check before ordering so that nothing surprises you after installation.

The description also mentions software updates delivered wirelessly (OTA). This means the unit's functions can be developed over time without a service visit. It can be an argument for people who like to keep their equipment updated, just like a phone or a television. The manufacturer does not describe in detail what changes such updates may bring, so we treat OTA as an extra and not as a reason to buy. At handover we will check with you which software version is installed and show you where to find information about the unit in the app.

Day to day, most people use only a few settings: temperature, operating mode, fan speed and the sleep curve. When we commission the unit we set these up together with you so that everyday use is simple and the more advanced functions, such as the energy report in the app, remain an extra for those interested. If several people in the household will manage the air conditioner, it is worth deciding in advance who owns the account in the app. In a rented flat it is also worth asking whether the account can easily be re-linked after a change of tenant, so that the new person can take over control without trouble. We sort out such details at commissioning, together with the network configuration.

Design and build

The indoor unit is 812 mm wide, 299 mm high and 199 mm deep, and weighs 9.3 kg. The casing is white, and its most important element is the Twinflap outlet panel with fine perforation. Because of the micro-holes the front looks different from a classic flap, but in white it stays understated and does not catch the eye, even in light interiors.

The perforation serves a practical purpose, not a decorative one. It is what disperses the stream, so it is better not to cover it or to mount the unit right under a shelf or curtain that would obstruct free airflow. When choosing the spot we take this into account: we leave clearance and direct the airflow so that the stream does not land straight on the places where people sit or sleep for longest.

The manufacturer's data contain no information on the dimensions and noise of the outdoor unit, so we check these in the documentation before the visit. When choosing a place for the outdoor unit we consider the distance from bedroom windows, because outdoor noise most often decides whether an air conditioner is a nuisance to the household or the neighbours. In blocks with narrow balconies and shared facades, space for the outdoor unit can be very limited, so we settle it before ordering and not after the equipment arrives. A housing community or co-operative may also have its own rules on the look of the facade, which is worth remembering early, before a decision on location is made.

Installation and service

We begin by agreeing together where the two units will go. Then we mount the indoor and outdoor units, run up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate lines, make the wall passage and lay the installation neatly. We pull a vacuum, check the system for leaks, charge it with refrigerant and start the unit. Finally we check the operating parameters, configure the controls and show you how to use the air conditioner; you also receive the warranty documents.

We set the scope of work at a free assessment, and any surcharges are discussed before work begins. They may concern a longer run, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, chasing channels into walls, a condensate pump or work from a lift platform. For the BreezelessE we do not quote a maximum installation length, because it is not in the manufacturer's data that we use here; we verify the final run on site against the documentation.

Servicing this model does not differ from servicing other air conditioners, although the i-Clean function reduces the risk of deposits on the heat exchanger. Clean the filters according to the instructions, ideally every few weeks in the season, and order a service once a year. It covers checking that the condensate drains freely, the tightness of the system and the condition of the heat exchanger. A service before the cooling season lets us catch small faults before they appear in the hottest weather. If the unit will also be used in winter, a second service in autumn helps check operation in heating mode. We propose dates well in advance so that they do not coincide with the busiest period for service, when calendars fill up within days.

Who this model is for — summary

The BreezelessE is for people who value gentle airflow above all: allergy sufferers and those sensitive to draughts, families with small children, and people working at a desk at home. It will do well in a bedroom, where quiet from 20 dB(A) and a sleep curve that adjusts the temperature at night count. It also suits a living room with a kitchenette, where several people spend the whole day and each feels the cold differently. The fast cooling quoted by the manufacturer, the algorithm that reacts to changes in the surroundings every 30 seconds and the consumption report in the app will help those who like to keep track of how much energy their equipment uses.

If, however, your priority is the lowest possible electricity bill, also look at models with a SEER higher than 7.1. BreezelessE uses energy sensibly but does not set records, and its strength is above all comfort. Likewise, if you need certainty about the noise of the outdoor unit or the maximum installation length, we will ask for confirmation of that data in the documentation before you order.
