The Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-HR is a series of wall-mounted air conditioners that the manufacturer calls classic and that we would call sensible. The version with the MSZ-HR35VFK indoor unit and the MUZ-HR35VF outdoor unit offers 3.4 kW of cooling and 3.6 kW of heating. It is not a model meant to surprise with its looks or record-breaking figures. Its job is different: to do the basic work well, which means cooling in summer, topping up the heating outside the season and causing no trouble in use. For many Warsaw residents that is exactly the reason to choose it, especially when an air conditioner should simply work rather than become a topic of conversation.
The indoor unit is very compact. It is 838 mm wide, 280 mm high and 228 mm deep, weighs 8.5 kg, and has a clean, gently wavy front panel. The noise level ranges from 22 to 46 dB, and the outdoor unit is rated at 51 dB. Seasonal cooling efficiency SEER is 6.2 (class A++), while heating gives SCOP 4.3 and class A+, and these are values for the temperate climate zone, that is, for the Polish climate. These figures are enough to judge honestly what to expect from the unit before you decide to buy.
From the VFK version on, the manufacturer describes built-in MELCloud Wi-Fi control, compatible with the Alexa assistant, which also shows energy consumption. Add to that the Econo Cool mode, automatic restart after a power cut and an anti-allergy filter. The model also has Replace technology, which allows existing pipes to be reused, something that matters when swapping an old air conditioner. Whether that is possible in a given flat we judge on site, and we quote the installed price after a free assessment.
The MSZ-HR series is the classic line in the Mitsubishi Electric range, named that way by the manufacturer itself. In practical terms this means an air conditioner without ornaments, built around a proven concept: a DC inverter, R32 refrigerant, a simple remote and a relatively small unit. The version we describe is the MSZ-HR35VFK set with the MUZ-HR35VF outdoor unit, a classic split system for a single room. Choosing it, the customer gets a device whose capabilities can be described with a handful of numbers, without decoding marketing names of modes.
The positioning of this model is best described by what it is not. It is not among the highest efficiency classes, because a SEER of 6.2 means class A++, not A+++. It has no black glass front and no extensive collection of modes. What it does have are functions that are really used every day: automatic restart, auto vane, self-diagnosis and Wi-Fi. The approach is closer to a tool than a gadget, and some customers are looking for exactly that.
A cooling capacity of 3.4 kW is enough for a single room of typical size, usually a bedroom, study or living room in a flat in a block. Before we recommend this version we check the sun exposure, the ceiling height and the number of people in the room. Too little capacity in a heatwave means running at the limit of output, while too much means short, frequent cycles, so we settle the choice of capacity at a free assessment and not from the floor area in a property listing alone.
The system uses DC Inverter technology, so the compressor regulates its speed instead of switching on and off. Cooling capacity ranges from 0.9 to 3.4 kW, with the upper value equal to the nominal one. In heating the nominal output is 3.6 kW, and the range extends from 0.9 to 3.7 kW. For anyone comparing catalogue sheets this is important: the model has no large reserve of capacity above the nominal value, so sizing should be done honestly and without too much optimism about heatwaves. The lower capacity limit of 0.9 kW, on the other hand, allows calm operation at low load, for example at night, without the compressor constantly switching on and off.
The energy class in cooling is A++, and SEER is 6.2. In heating SCOP is 4.3 with class A+, but these are values for the temperate zone, and that is how we state them. The unit cools at outdoor temperatures from -10°C to 46°C and heats at outdoor temperatures from -10°C to 24°C. In practice the heat pump works as a supplement to heating in transitional periods, but in hard frost it is not a heat source to rely on without additional heating.
Econo Cool mode is intelligent temperature control: according to the manufacturer it lets you correct the setting by up to 2 °C without losing comfort and improves efficiency by 20%. The refrigerant is R32, with a low GWP and a small charge in the circuit. The maximum installation length is 20 m, which usually leaves a reserve even with a less obvious placement of the units, for example when the outdoor unit ends up on a loggia on the other side of the flat.
Air distribution is handled by horizontal swing, with an airflow reach of up to 12 m and an outlet angle of 150°. This means the airflow covers a wide sector of the room, which matters in the longer, narrower living rooms typical of older flats. Fan speed selection is automatic, so there is no need to keep changing the speed on the remote, and the vane closes by itself when the unit is switched off (auto vane), so the unit looks tidy even when not running.
The indoor unit runs at between 22 and 46 dB depending on the selected speed, and the outdoor unit is rated at 51 dB. Near a balcony or a bedroom window it is worth thinking about where the outdoor unit goes. At the assessment stage we show the customer several options and say which one minimises noise in the rooms, including at the neighbours', because they are the ones who most often complain.
The anti-allergy filter looks after the air. The manufacturer does not describe extensive ionisation systems or self-cleaning here, so we do not attribute them to this model. Keeping it clean comes down to regular filter cleaning according to the manual and a yearly service visit, as with any air conditioner. With such a simple design, the user's tasks come down to a few actions, which we show when handing over the unit. It is enough to know how to take out and wash the filter and how to set the airflow direction so the stream does not hit the bed or desk directly.
According to the manufacturer's description, the MSZ-HR_VFK version has built-in MELCloud Wi-Fi control. It lets you operate the unit remotely from a phone and, less typically, shows energy consumption. For someone who wants to know how much the air conditioner actually runs in a hot month, that is practical information the remote alone does not give. Wi-Fi is therefore an element of cost control here, not just a remote button.
The model is compatible with the Alexa assistant, so basic commands can be given by voice if someone uses such a system at home. Remote control requires a Wi-Fi network in the flat, so during commissioning we help connect the unit to the network and check that the control responds to commands. If the network in the flat is sometimes unstable, the unit can still be operated with the remote, so Wi-Fi is a convenient addition.
The unit comes with a new, intuitive remote with the basic modes. The model also has an IT connector and self-diagnosis, which helps establish the cause of a possible fault. The automatic restart function after a power cut means that after a short outage the air conditioner returns to work without being switched on by hand, which will be appreciated by people who travel for longer or live in buildings with an unstable power supply.
The indoor unit is white and understated. The manufacturer describes a clean, gently wavy front panel that does not draw attention and suits most interiors, from a new apartment to a flat in a tenement house. It is a solution for people who prefer the air conditioner not to dominate the room but to be neatly matched to the wall, with no decorative accents and no mirror-like surfaces that show every mark. A white casing is easy to keep clean with an ordinary damp cloth, and its shade goes well with a typical light wall.
Dimensions of 838 × 280 × 228 mm and a weight of 8.5 kg are compact, which makes installation easier and allows the unit to be hung in places with limited space, for example above a wardrobe or in a small bedroom. The manufacturer explicitly stresses that the very compact dimensions make installation easier. The low height of the unit appears on the wall as a slim strip rather than a heavy box.
Replace technology is also worth mentioning. It allows existing pipes to be reused if the flat already has an older air conditioning installation. Whether a particular route can be kept we judge on site, because the condition, diameters and tightness of the pipes must be checked before the decision. When it works, it saves time and reduces chasing in walls, which in a renovated flat is sometimes the most important argument. If the pipes turn out to be unsuitable, we install a new route and tell you before work starts, so the scope and any surcharges are clear.
A standard installation includes hanging the indoor unit and placing the outdoor one, as well as running up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate lines. We make the wall penetration and route the installation so that it is as inconspicuous as possible. Then we pull a vacuum and check the system for leaks, charge it with refrigerant and start the air conditioner. We work so as to limit dust and noise in the flat, and afterwards we clean up and show how to use the remote and the app.
We check the operating parameters, configure the controls, including MELCloud Wi-Fi, and give a walkthrough of operation, then hand over the warranty documents. The manufacturer allows an installation length of up to 20 m, and the scope of work in a particular flat is agreed at a free assessment, after looking at the walls, the place for the outdoor unit and the condensate route.
Possible surcharges are discussed before the work: a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, wall chasing, a condensate pump and work from a lift platform. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. After installation it is worth cleaning the filters according to the manual and booking a service visit once a year, so that the unit keeps running efficiently and quietly and self-diagnosis is not the first sign of a problem.
The Mitsubishi Electric MSZ-HR 3.4 kW is a good choice for someone looking for a proven, compact air conditioner for a single room who does not want to overpay for elaborate extras. It makes sense in a flat in a block, in a bedroom or a medium-sized living room, if the main goal is cooling in summer and occasional heating in spring and autumn. It will also suit someone replacing an older air conditioner who wants to limit the scope of work, as long as the condition of the existing pipes allows it.
It is especially worth considering when pipes from an old air conditioner remain in the flat. Replace technology then offers a chance to reuse the existing route, provided it meets the technical conditions. The built-in MELCloud Wi-Fi with energy consumption readout is an extra for people who like to control costs and check how the unit works. A simple remote and automation mean you do not have to learn many modes to use the unit every day, which older members of the household will appreciate too.
We would not recommend it as the only source of heat for winter: the heating range ends at -10°C, and SCOP 4.3 in class A+ is decent but not a record. If advanced air purification or striking design matters to you, look for another model. If you want simple, solid equipment, ask for a quote: we quote the installed price after a free assessment.
