The Samsung WindFree Elite S2 in its 3.5 kW variant is an air conditioner for someone who dislikes feeling airflow on the skin. Instead of aiming a stream straight into the room, the indoor unit disperses cool air through 21,000 micro-holes. The manufacturer states that the outlet air speed then falls below 0.15 m/s, which ASHRAE regards as still air. The effect is easy to describe: the room gets cooler, but it does not feel as if someone is standing next to an open window. For a Warsaw resident whose bedroom faces south, or who works at home on hot afternoons, that is an important difference, because the unit works in the background instead of becoming another source of discomfort.

The numbers are strong on both sides of the catalogue. Nominal cooling capacity is 3.5 kW and heating capacity 4.0 kW; in cooling the unit operates from 1000 to 4800 W and in heating from 700 to 7300 W. Seasonal efficiency is SEER 8.8 and SCOP 5.1, which gives energy class A+++ in both modes. The indoor unit weighs 10.5 kg, measures 889 × 299 × 215 mm, and its sound pressure level lies between 16 and 40 dB(A). The manufacturer also gives the outdoor operating range: from -10 to 46°C in cooling and from -15 to 24°C in heating.

Hygiene and control complete the picture. Freeze Wash freezes the heat exchanger and flushes it with its own frost, the Tri-Care and Easy Filter Plus filters retain dust and allergens, and the SmartThings app with Wi-Fi gives access to the AI modes. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. Below we explain how these features work in a flat, and we also say where the model's limits are, because an honest conversation about an air conditioner covers more than its strengths.

Overview and positioning

Samsung describes the WindFree Elite S2 as a wall-mounted air conditioner from the top shelf of its WindFree series, and in the LeoKlima catalogue we classify it as a premium model. It differs from ordinary air conditioners above all in how it delivers the cold. A standard unit blows a stream towards the room, whereas the Elite S2, once the set temperature is reached, limits direct airflow and relies on the dispersal of air through fine holes in the panel. Samsung labels the units AR70F12CAAWNEU for indoors and AR70F12CAAWXEU for outdoors, which helps you compare our offer with the datasheet if you check the documents yourself.

This way of working makes most sense where the air conditioner hangs above a place where you spend a long time: over a bed, a sofa or a desk. The draught from a classic unit can be tiresome, especially in a bedroom, where even a gentle stream wakes you or chills the back of your neck. You notice the difference most when the unit runs all night rather than for one hour in the afternoon. In such situations Samsung's idea is simply practical, not only a technical curiosity.

The 3.5 kW variant suits medium-sized flats: a living room, a large bedroom or a study. For very large, open spaces it is worth calculating the required capacity separately, and in a very small room this capacity may be unnecessarily large. We check the choice during the free assessment, before you decide to buy.

Cooling and heating technology

The AI Twin Rotary compressor has two rotors turning in opposite directions, which, according to the manufacturer, reduces noise and increases efficiency. It is a combination the manufacturer links with quieter operation and higher efficiency, and it stands behind the low noise level of the indoor unit. Cooling output is regulated from 1000 to 4800 W around a nominal 3.5 kW, and heating output from 700 to 7300 W around a nominal 4.0 kW. As a result the unit does not work in an all-or-nothing way but adjusts to how much heat has to be removed or added.

The seasonal parameters are SEER 8.8 in cooling and SCOP 5.1 in heating, and both energy classes are A+++. The refrigerant is R32. The operating range in cooling reaches from -10 to 46°C outdoor temperature, and in heating from -15 to 24°C, so the heat pump can supplement heating on colder days as well. Such a temperature range means that in autumn and spring the unit can top up the heating of a flat without switching on other heat sources. We do not promise heating in frosts below -15°C, because that lies beyond the manufacturer's data.

New for 2025 is the Dry Comfort mode with a humidity sensor. It dries the air without lowering the temperature too much and, according to the manufacturer, saves up to 30% of energy compared with classic dehumidification. It is useful on humid summer days when the temperature in the flat is tolerable but the air feels heavy, and in rooms where moisture lingers. For the sake of order: Dry Comfort is a dehumidifying function, not additional cooling, so it will not replace cooling mode when the flat is really hot.

Comfort and air quality

In WindFree mode air leaves through 21,000 micro-holes at a speed below 0.15 m/s. It is this value that produces the impression of still air: the temperature in the room drops, yet you feel no movement on your skin. The manufacturer points out that this also translates into quiet operation, and the lowest sound pressure level of the indoor unit is 16 dB(A), with a maximum of 40 dB(A). The range of 16–40 dB(A) means that at the quietest setting the unit works at a level that is almost inaudible at night, while at the highest it is still comfortable to live with.

Several mechanisms support hygiene inside the unit. Freeze Wash freezes the heat exchanger, melts the frost with an airflow that removes dirt and up to 90% of microorganisms, and then dries the remaining moisture. Auto Clean prevents moisture building up in the unit, and therefore bacteria and odours as well. The manufacturer presents this set as protection against moisture, bacteria and smells, so after the cooling season you avoid a musty odour at the first start-up the next year. The Tri-Care and Easy Filter Plus filters retain viruses, dust and allergens, which matters with allergies.

None of these functions removes the need for basic care. Filters must be taken out and washed from time to time, and once a year it is good to order an inspection of the installation, including a tightness check and the condition of the heat exchanger. For allergy sufferers it is worth adding that the filters are meant to retain viruses, dust and allergens but do not replace airing and vacuuming the flat. This way the air conditioner keeps its efficiency and the quietness for which this series is known.

Controls and Wi-Fi

Samsung describes control through the SmartThings app with Wi-Fi. The manufacturer lists four functions that use data from the app: AI Auto Cooling analyses conditions in the room and the history of use, AI Energy optimises energy consumption with artificial intelligence, Welcome Cooling switches the unit on as you approach home, and Away Mode lets you switch it off remotely. Thanks to this, the app is not only a remote control but a tool that tries to anticipate your needs.

Two of them are especially useful in practice. Welcome Cooling means you return to a flat where the temperature is already pleasant, and Away Mode rescues the situation when you leave and forget to switch the unit off. If you like to keep everything under control, you can ignore the AI functions and use the unit in the classic way. The data we have do not say how the connectivity module is supplied, so we do not assume what exactly is in the box.

The manufacturer also mentions a SolarCell remote, so you can change settings both from the remote and from your smartphone. The AI Auto Cooling function takes the history of use into account, so over time the control may fit your way of using the air conditioner better, which is convenient if you do not want to adjust settings by hand every time.

Design and build

The indoor unit is white and measures 889 × 299 × 215 mm. A white casing suits most interiors, and the small depth means the air conditioner does not dominate the furniture. With a weight of 10.5 kg, hanging is easier than with heavier models, but before installation we check the wall type and the strength of the bracket instead of assuming everything will go smoothly. When positioning the indoor unit we also leave free space around the panel so that the air can disperse freely.

A characteristic feature of the series is the panel with 21,000 micro-holes, through which cool air is dispersed. The panel should be cared for gently, by regular dusting or wiping with a soft cloth, without aggressive agents. Cleanliness matters here, because dirty holes could worsen the way air is dispersed in WindFree mode.

The outdoor unit has a sound pressure level of 46 dB(A). When choosing where to place it we pay attention to bedrooms and neighbours' windows, because a quiet indoor unit achieves little if a louder outdoor unit sits right behind the wall. We usually look for a compromise between route length and acoustic comfort. A good location for the outdoor unit matters more for comfort than yet another parameter from the catalogue sheet.

Installation and service

Installing the Samsung WindFree Elite S2 covers hanging the indoor unit and placing the outdoor one, running up to several metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate lines, and making a passage through the wall with a tidy arrangement of the cables. We then pull a vacuum, check the tightness of the system, charge it with refrigerant and start the unit. We carry out all the work so that the flat is clean when the crew leaves and the lines are laid evenly and do not catch the eye.

The manufacturer allows an installation up to 20 m long, but we treat a long route as a separate topic, because it is usually what causes an extra charge. After start-up we check the operating parameters, configure the controls and help pair the unit with the SmartThings app if you want to use it. We also check that condensate drains away without obstruction, as this is a frequent cause of later complaints. Finally we show you how to operate the unit and hand over the warranty documents.

We discuss possible extra charges before the work. They concern a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, chasing walls, a condensate pump or work from a lift platform. We settle the scope at the free assessment, and we quote the installed price after a free assessment, so that nothing surprises you after the work is done. This gives you a clear picture of costs and dates before anything is installed.

Who this model is for — summary

The Samsung WindFree Elite S2 3.5 kW is for people who choose an air conditioner mainly for comfort rather than for raw capacity. It will work well above a bed or sofa, in a room with a child, and anywhere that even a gentle draught is irritating. Operation from 16 dB(A) and the seasonal parameters SEER 8.8 and SCOP 5.1 speak further in its favour in a bedroom. It also suits people who want one unit to look after both temperature and humidity in a room.

Consider another model if you want a simple unit without extras, do not plan to use the app, or have a room so large that 3.5 kW will not be enough. It will also make less sense where the air conditioner switches on rarely and briefly, because then the advantages of quiet, discreet operation will not show in full. If, on the other hand, direct airflow does not bother you, you can save on features you will not use anyway.

It is best to show this on site: we will come, measure the room and check how the unit fits the layout of walls and furniture. If you wish, we can choose it together with a furniture plan, to avoid putting the bed or desk in the most difficult spot of the room. We quote the installed price after a free assessment, and we discuss any extra charges before the work begins.
