The Toshiba Shorai Curve in the 3.5 kW version (indoor unit RAS-B13P2KVSG-E, outdoor unit RAS-13P2AVSG-E) is an air conditioner that combines looks with winter performance. The manufacturer describes it as a premium unit with a gently curved casing in a matte finish, available in black or white. We describe the matte white version, and the black one has the same technical data.

The numbers are strong. Nominal cooling capacity is 3.5 kW (range 1.0 kW to 4.1 kW) and nominal heating capacity is 4.2 kW (1.0 kW to 5.3 kW). Seasonal efficiency is SEER 8.6 and SCOP 5.1, which means A+++ in cooling and in heating. The indoor unit runs from 19 dB to 43 dB and the outdoor unit makes 47 dB. The heating operating range reaches from -20°C to 24°C, and the manufacturer states stable heating even below -20°C outdoor temperature, supported by the intelligent Strong defrost system.

The biggest advantage in daily use is the built-in Wi-Fi adapter and the Toshiba Home AC Control app, which offers full monitoring, scheduling, energy-use monitoring and voice control. Add a plasma ioniser, Magic Coil technology and a fireplace function. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. Before choosing a capacity, consider the sun exposure, the ceiling height and the number of people in the room. On site we look at the flat and measure the route, and only then confirm whether 3.5 kW is the right size. We quote every value as the manufacturer wrote it, without rounding in our favour, and if something is missing from the data, we say so openly.

Overview and positioning

Shorai Curve is a new Toshiba line, which the manufacturer describes as built on the heritage of the Haori and Daiseikai 10 models. It stands out for the flowing curve of its casing and a matte finish, available in black or white. In practice it is an air conditioner meant to be visible in a modern interior without shouting with colour or glossy plastic.

This 3.5 kW variant consists of indoor unit RAS-B13P2KVSG-E in matte white and outdoor unit RAS-13P2AVSG-E. The black indoor unit is designated RAS-B13P2KVSGB-E and has the same data. Nominal capacity is 3.5 kW in cooling and 4.2 kW in heating, which leaves room for a bedroom, living room or lounge in a flat.

The positioning is legible: a unit for someone who wants looks, the top energy class, Wi-Fi connectivity and a good winter result in one set. If you care about none of these, our range has simpler models, but if you care about all of them, this one belongs to a narrow group of candidates. It is also worth distinguishing it from air conditioners whose descriptions promise a lot and where important parts must be bought separately. Here network connectivity is in the set, so the cost of the whole solution is easier to predict. For a Warsaw flat where the unit works in summer and in the shoulder season, that is a sensible starting point for comparing offers.

Cooling and heating technology

Cooling output varies from 1.0 kW to 4.1 kW around a nominal 3.5 kW, and heating from 1.0 kW to 5.3 kW around a nominal 4.2 kW. The refrigerant is R32. Seasonal efficiency of SEER 8.6 in cooling and SCOP 5.1 in heating gives class A+++ in both modes. These values translate into low energy use both in heatwaves and in the cooler months.

In winter it is not only efficiency that counts but the ability to run at low temperature. The heating operating range is from -20°C to 24°C, and the manufacturer writes of stable heating even below -20°C outdoor temperature. In cooling the unit works from -15°C to 46°C. In Polish conditions that means the air conditioner can help heat a flat for most of the season, but in severe frost it should not be the only source of heat.

An intelligent defrost system deals with frost. The manufacturer lists a Strong defrost function and on-demand defrosting, meaning it starts when it is genuinely needed. For the user that means shorter and rarer breaks in heating. The heat exchanger has a protective layer in Magic Coil technology, and for cold days there is a fireplace function, which the manufacturer lists alongside auto, ECO, temperature holding and power limiting modes. With such a wide modulation range the unit does not need to run at full speed when little heat or cold is needed. In spring and autumn the compressor works near the bottom of the range, which favours low energy use. High winter figures do not mean the unit replaces building heating: treat it as strong support.

Comfort and air quality

The indoor unit runs from 19 dB to 43 dB, and the manufacturer stresses quiet operation, down to 19 dB(A), which with a suitable night setting makes very comfortable conditions for sleep. In a bedroom, 19 dB means the air conditioner can run at night almost unnoticed. The outdoor unit makes 47 dB, which is worth considering when choosing where to mount it under bedroom windows.

A plasma ioniser looks after air cleanliness. According to the manufacturer it neutralises viruses and bacteria and absorbs smoke and odours. We describe it as support, not a replacement for ventilation: the ioniser does not release you from washing filters regularly and airing the flat. A filter-cleaning notification tells you when they need washing.

Magic Coil technology is a protective layer on the heat exchanger. It is not a self-cleaning function but a design element that the manufacturer describes as a protective coating of the exchanger. Comfort is completed by the auto, ECO, temperature holding and power limiting modes, which let you match operation to the time of day and the situation in the flat. A good habit is to set the airflow so the stream does not fall directly on a bed or desk. ECO and temperature holding modes help limit consumption, and power limiting can be useful when several high-draw appliances run in the flat at once. These are small things, but they decide everyday comfort.

Controls and Wi-Fi

Unlike many models where connectivity is an option, in the Shorai Curve the manufacturer gives a built-in Wi-Fi adapter. That means you do not need to buy a module: the air conditioner can be joined to your home network and controlled from a phone.

The app is called Toshiba Home AC Control. According to the manufacturer it gives full monitoring of the unit, an operating schedule, energy-use monitoring and voice control. The schedule is handy when you want the flat cooled or warmed before you arrive, and usage monitoring lets you see what the unit really costs to run in a given month.

We configure connectivity and the app during commissioning: we check the network at the installation spot, connect the unit and show the key functions. Remember that connection quality depends on your router's range at the place where the unit hangs, so with a weak signal, moving the router or adding a repeater helps. Treat a Wi-Fi-connected unit like any other device: use a current router password and do not share app access with outsiders. We also advise keeping the app account details somewhere safe, which makes reconnecting easier after replacing a router or phone. If you work from home, the schedule lets you set cooling for the hours when you are actually there.

Design and build

The indoor unit is 822 mm wide, 293 mm high and 226 mm deep, and weighs 11 kg. The casing is gently curved with a matte finish, which the manufacturer calls flowing curves. Matte white copes well with daylight and does not reflect it as gloss does, so the unit looks calm even in bright rooms.

There are two colours: white and black, with identical parameters. The indoor unit designations differ in their ending: the white one is RAS-B13P2KVSG-E and the black one is RAS-B13P2KVSGB-E. We choose the colour with you at the quotation stage.

The outdoor unit RAS-13P2AVSG-E is the element easy to forget when choosing looks. In a block of flats it needs the consent of the manager or community, and its position affects the noise felt in the flat and by neighbours. That is why we choose the place during the visit, not on installation day. A matte finish is less prone to visible fingerprints and smears than glossy surfaces, but dust shows more on a darker casing. So decide not only on the wall colour but also on how often you want to wipe the casing. An 11 kg unit needs a solid bracket on a load-bearing wall, which we check during the visit.

Installation and service

As part of installation we mount the indoor and outdoor units and run up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate route. That includes the wall passage and a neat run of the installation. We evacuate the system and check it for leaks, charge it with refrigerant and start the unit.

Then we check operating parameters and configure the controls, including the connection to the app. At the end comes instruction in how to use the unit and the handover of warranty documents. The manufacturer's maximum installation length is 20 m.

Possible extra charges are discussed before work: a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, chasing walls, a condensate pump or work from a lift platform. We settle the scope at the free audit. We stress that extras are not automatic: most standard installations in flats fit the scope described. When the route is long, the wall hard or a condensate pump needed, we tell you before work starts so that you can decide with full knowledge. In use, the filter-cleaning notification helps. Before handover we also show how to remove and wash the filter and what the notification means. Once a year it is worth ordering a service in which we check tightness, the condensate drain and the condition of the exchangers.

Who this model is for — summary

The Toshiba Shorai Curve 3.5 kW is for people who combine several expectations at once: a stylish casing, quiet running, class A+++ and phone control without buying extra modules. It is also a good choice where the air conditioner should help with heating in the colder months, because the manufacturer declares heating operation down to -20°C and stable heating below that value as well.

It makes less sense when you need the simplest unit for a few weeks of heat a year, since then you will not use its winter abilities or the app. Remember too that Wi-Fi range at the installation spot is a matter for your home network, not the air conditioner.

We quote the installed price after a free assessment. Write or call and we will arrange a visit at which we check whether 3.5 kW is the right capacity for your room and where best to hang both units. If it turns out another size is better, we will say so plainly. In short, this is a model for people who expect a lot from one device and want to test it in practice, not on paper. A free assessment lets you set the manufacturer's promises against the conditions of your flat before you decide to buy.
