The Rotenso Ukura 3.5 kW (R17) is a wall-mounted inverter air conditioner for apartments and small offices. The manufacturer built it around three things: heating in low outdoor temperatures, air filtration with an ioniser, and smartphone control. The rated cooling capacity is 3.5 kW and the rated heating capacity is 3.8 kW, so the model suits a living room or bedroom of average size, provided we first work out the heat gains from windows and equipment. This variant is meant for a single room, and we choose the size only after seeing the flat.

The key figures from the manufacturer's data are SEER 6.5 (class A++) and SCOP 4.1 (class A+). The indoor unit runs at a sound level from 20 to 39 dB and the outdoor unit emits 56 dB. The unit cools at outdoor temperatures from -15°C to 50°C and heats from -22°C to 24°C. The refrigerant is R32, and the maximum pipe length is 25 m. The manufacturer also gives the indoor unit dimensions as 813 × 201 × 289 mm and its weight as 7.4 kg, which helps when judging the space above a door or on a wall.

In terms of equipment, the Ukura has the iAIR Super Ionizer, the iClean function that dries the heat exchanger, an antibacterial filter and a Cold Nano filter, automatic 4D louvres and the Smart WiFi function. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. Below we describe what these data mean in everyday use in a Warsaw apartment and what to watch for during installation. It is rounded off by auto-restart memory, a timer and a self-diagnosis function.

Overview and positioning

The Ukura is one of the wall-mounted Rotenso air conditioners with a clear focus on winter operation. What sets it apart from many models in a similar capacity class is the declared heating range down to -22°C and the high SEER of 6.5. In practice this is a unit you can consider not only for summer cooling but also as an additional source of heat in early spring and autumn, when the radiators in a block of flats are not yet on or have already been switched off. For Warsaw residents this matters, because many flats in older buildings have limited options for routing the installation, and the outdoor unit has to find a place on the facade or balcony.

The variant described on this page is the 3.5 kW unit marked R17. The rated cooling capacity is 3.5 kW (3512 W) and the rated heating capacity is 3.8 kW (3810 W). The compressor modulation range runs from 1102 to 3801 W in cooling and from 1081 to 4050 W in heating. A wide modulation range means that once the set temperature is reached, the unit slows down instead of switching on and off frequently.

In energy classes the Ukura reaches A++ in cooling and A+ in heating. We do not quote savings in zloty here, because they depend on the insulation of the flat, sun exposure and the habits of the household. During the free assessment we help judge whether 3.5 kW is enough for a given room or whether a different size is worth considering. This approach is more honest than promising one size for every living room.

Cooling and heating technology

At the heart of the unit is a compressor controlled by a Digital DC Inverter. According to the manufacturer, the management system can choose from 30 compressor frequency ranges, matching output to current demand. The fans are driven by BLDC motors with 12 speed levels, which shortens the time needed to reach the set temperature and reduces energy use. As a result the unit works smoothly, without abrupt jumps in output, which supports quiet operation and a stable room temperature. The refrigerant is R32, which has a lower global warming potential than older refrigerants.

The operating range is important information for a customer in Warsaw. Cooling is possible at outdoor temperatures from -15°C to 50°C, and heating from -22°C to 24°C. The manufacturer notes that heating down to -22°C does not apply to the 2.1 kW version, whereas the 3.5 kW variant on this page is covered by that range. For winter operation the unit has a drain pan heater that helps remove snow and ice from the outdoor unit, and a compressor crankcase heater.

The eMOTO turbo mode is there for a faster response. It briefly increases compressor and fan output, and the manufacturer states that it can save up to 20 percent of the time needed to reach the set temperature. There is also an airflow control system: in heating mode the unit first warms up the refrigeration circuit and only then starts the airflow, so that cold air is not blown into the room. In addition there is the Smart 8°C heating function, which keeps an empty room at 8°C.

Comfort and air quality

The indoor unit runs at a sound level from 20 to 39 dB, so at the lowest speeds it is clearly quiet. In a bedroom it is worth using the eMOTO super quiet mode and the sleep function. During cooling or heating the sleep function changes the temperature by 1°C every hour for the first two hours, then holds it for the next five hours and returns to the previous settings. You can also mute the beeps and switch off the display on the panel.

The air is distributed in a wide eMOTO stream, and the automatic 4D louvres let you set the airflow direction from the remote or the wall controller. The air conditioner remembers the last louvre position and restores it after restarting. In practice it is worth setting the louvres so that the stream misses the place where we sleep or work. If we want to avoid a direct draught on the bed or desk, the louvre setting matters more than the output of the unit.

Three elements are responsible for air quality. The iAIR Super Ionizer produces negative ions which, according to the manufacturer, reduce viruses, bacteria, mites and allergens and remove odours. The antibacterial filter captures mechanical impurities, and the Cold Nano filter removes volatile organic compounds and formaldehyde with an efficiency of 92.9 percent within 2.5 hours. The iClean function dries the exchanger for 16 minutes after operation in cooling or dry mode, which limits the moisture that favours bacteria and fungi. The filters still have to be cleaned regularly, according to the manual.

Controls and Wi-Fi

The basic way to operate the unit is the wireless remote. The unit also has a Smart port to which a wired controller can be connected, and the Smart Follow mode uses an additional temperature sensor built into the remote or controller. As a result the air conditioner regulates its work according to the temperature where we are sitting, and not only next to the indoor unit under the ceiling. Switching off the display on the panel is useful at night, when the light of the diodes could disturb sleep in a bedroom.

The manufacturer describes the Smart WiFi function, which means controlling the air conditioner from a tablet or smartphone both at home and away. According to the manufacturer's description, a Wi-Fi modem is needed for this. Control through an app is therefore possible, and when you order we check in what configuration the module is supplied, so that there are no surprises after installation. With the app you can switch the unit on before coming home, so the room is already cooled or heated.

For everyday convenience there is a timer, in which we set the switch-on and switch-off times, and auto-restart memory. After a brief power cut the unit returns to its previous operating mode. The self-diagnosis function shows the error code on the unit or on the wired controller, which makes the conversation with a service technician easier. In standby the power consumption drops to 1 W. After installation we go through the control settings with the customer and show how to use the most important functions.

Design and build

The indoor unit measures 813 mm in width, 201 mm in depth and 289 mm in height, and weighs 7.4 kg. The manufacturer describes a minimalist casing with a high gloss and a uniform front panel without visible divisions. Such a form blends easily into the wall, but the gloss calls for gentle wiping with a soft cloth to avoid scratches. The size is similar to a typical wall-mounted air conditioner of this capacity class, so it usually fits without difficulty above a door or on a free wall in the living room.

The manufacturer describes the interior construction in detail. Densely grooved copper tubes increase the heat exchange surface, and the fan blades were designed on bionic principles to reduce air resistance and noise. The magnet motor with a vector-shaped magnet has, according to the manufacturer, 10 percent higher efficiency at a size 35 percent smaller. These are the manufacturer's claims that are hard to check on site, but they show the direction of the design.

The exchanger in the indoor and outdoor unit is covered with a gold anti-corrosion coating. The gold-plated fins protect the exchanger against corrosion, which matters for a unit working outdoors in changing weather. It is a protection of the material, not a self-cleaning function of the appliance, so the filters and the exchanger still need periodic servicing. Condensate can be drained to the left or the right side of the indoor unit, which makes it easier to route the hose in a flat where not every wall is suitable for drilling.

Installation and service

As part of the installation LeoKlima mounts the indoor and the outdoor unit and runs up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate lines. This includes the passage through the wall and neat routing of the installation. We then evacuate the system and check it for leaks, charge it with refrigerant and start the unit. At the end we check the operating parameters, configure the controls, give a walkthrough of the operation and hand over the warranty documents. The whole scope is written down before the work, so the customer knows what is included.

We agree the scope during a free assessment. Possible extra charges are discussed before the work starts: a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, wall chasing, a condensate pump and work from a lift platform. The manufacturer allows an installation length of up to 25 m, but every metre beyond the standard scope is agreed with the customer in advance. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. This way there are no surprises on the installation day, and the crew knows what materials it needs.

In service, the simple things matter most: cleaning the filters as the manufacturer recommends, keeping the condensate drain clear, and an annual inspection that covers checking the system for leaks and the cleanliness of the exchangers. In winter, before switching on heating, we check that the outdoor unit is not buried in snow or iced over. A regular inspection reduces the risk of a failure during the season. If an error message appears, the self-diagnosis function described in the manual helps.

Who this model is for — summary

The Ukura is a good choice for someone who wants to use an air conditioner also in the colder months and cares about a heating range down to -22°C and a high SEER of 6.5. The ioniser and the multi-stage filtration also speak for it if the household includes allergy sufferers or pets. It is a good candidate for a living room and a bedroom, especially if we want to control the unit from a phone. It is also a sensible choice for people who work from home and need quiet operation during calls and an even temperature at the desk.

It is worth judging the model against your needs, not against names: the Ukura has an indoor sound range from 20 to 39 dB, but the outdoor unit emits 56 dB. If a neighbour's window or a balcony is right next to the planned place for the outdoor unit, this parameter has to be taken into account when choosing the location. It will be less suitable for someone looking for the simplest unit without extra functions, because many of the described solutions, such as the ioniser and Wi-Fi, make sense only if we are going to use them.

If you are considering this model, book a free assessment. During the visit we will check the flat, propose a place for both units, work out the length of the route and point out possible extra charges. Only then will we give the installed price. We will also explain how to look after the filters, when to plan a service visit and what to do before the first start-up after winter.
