The Rotenso Versu Cloth Caramel is a wall-mounted split air conditioner with a DC Inverter drive, intended for flats and small houses. In the 3.5 kW variant the manufacturer gives a nominal output of 3.5 kW in cooling and 3.8 kW in heating. The unit runs on R32 refrigerant, and the seasonal figures are SEER 8.5 (class A+++) for cooling and SCOP 4.6 (class A++) for heating. The character of the model comes from the textile front panel in the Caramel version, which can be swapped for another colour.

For someone choosing an air conditioner for a bedroom or living room, quietness and even airflow matter most. The indoor unit runs at a noise level of 19 to 40 dB, while the outdoor unit reaches 53 dB. The horizontal louvre swivels through 180° up and down and is driven by actuators, and the airflow is completed by cascading upper and lower air outlets. The air passes through the HD iAIR pre-filter, a 3-in-1 filter and the iAIR ioniser. Control through an app is possible thanks to the SMART Wi-Fi function with a Wi-Fi modem.

The indoor unit measures 920 × 211 × 321 mm and weighs 11.3 kg, and the maximum installation length is 25 m. LeoKlima carries out installation in Warsaw, from drilling the wall to commissioning and a walkthrough of the controls. We quote the installed price after a free assessment, and we agree the scope of work at a free audit at your place. Below we describe the model section by section: technology, comfort, controls, build and installation.

Overview and positioning

The Rotenso Versu Cloth Caramel belongs to the Versu series, a line of wall-mounted air conditioners in which the manufacturer focuses on the look of the indoor unit and low noise. The 3.5 kW variant is a typical choice for a room or bedroom of medium size: nominal cooling output is 3.5 kW and heating output is 3.8 kW. These are values for a single split unit, not the total output of a multi-unit system.

The positioning of the model is easiest to describe with numbers. Class A+++ in cooling at SEER 8.5 and A++ in heating at SCOP 4.6 are figures typical of an energy-efficient inverter. The indoor unit's noise level starts at 19 dB, which the manufacturer explicitly highlights as one of its main features. Added to this is the declared heating operation at low outdoor temperatures, in this variant down to -25°C.

A 3.5 kW rating is not right for every flat. For a large, sunny living room with tall windows, or an open space joining the kitchen and the lounge, it is worth calculating the cooling demand separately instead of relying on floor area alone. That is why, at the quotation stage, we check the volume of the room, window orientation and the number of occupants, and only then confirm whether this model is the right one.

Cooling and heating technology

The heart of the unit is a compressor controlled by a DC inverter. The manufacturer describes the Digital DC Inverter SKY R system, in which the control unit selects one of 30 compressor frequency ranges to match output to demand. As a result, cooling output can vary from 1.3 kW to 4.3 kW (nominally 3.5 kW), and heating output from 0.9 kW to 4.4 kW (nominally 3.8 kW). The wide modulation range helps avoid constant switching of the compressor on and off.

The fans are driven by BLDC motors. According to the manufacturer they have 12 rotational speed levels, and their design helps reach the set temperature faster with lower energy use. The heat exchanger is made of densely toothed copper tubes, and the fan blades were designed using bionic principles to reduce air resistance and noise. The refrigerant is R32.

For winter operation the unit has a package that includes a drain tray heater and a compressor crankcase heater. The first melts snow and ice in the outdoor unit, the second prepares the compressor for operation in heating mode. The heating operating range extends from -25°C to 30°C outdoor temperature, and the cooling range from -15°C to 50°C. In the Polish climate the air conditioner can therefore top up heating in transitional seasons and on cool days, but in severe frost it is wise to treat it as a supplement rather than the only heat source if you are unsure about the insulation of the building.

Comfort and air quality

The indoor unit's noise level is 19 to 40 dB and the outdoor unit's is 53 dB. The lowest value applies to the eMOTO super-quiet mode, which the manufacturer proposes for night operation. There is also a sleep function that gradually changes the temperature overnight, and a silent mode that mutes beeps and visual messages. If the bedroom borders a balcony where the outdoor unit stands, remember the 53 dB from outside and choose the mounting spot carefully.

Airflow is handled by automatic 4D louvres. The horizontal louvre can be set across a 180° range up and down, and the system remembers its last position after restart. The eMOTO airflow control system prevents cold air from being blown in heating mode, because it starts the refrigeration circuit before it starts the fan. There is also a turbo mode, which according to the manufacturer shortens the time to reach the required temperature by up to 20 percent, and an Eco mode, which is meant to reduce energy use by up to 60 percent. The manufacturer marks these functions as unavailable in a Multi Split system.

Air quality is the job of the iAIR set of filters: an HD pre-filter, a filter with antibacterial properties, a 3-in-1 filter (silver ion, photocatalytic and Cold Nano) and the iAIR Super Ioniser, which generates negative oxygen ions. The manufacturer describes the ioniser as reducing bacteria, dust mites, viruses and allergens in the air. The iClean function cools and then heats the indoor unit's heat exchanger to limit bacteria and fungi. The filters still need regular cleaning, ideally every few weeks in the season.

Controls and Wi-Fi

The air conditioner is operated with a wireless remote, which also adjusts the louvres. An optional wired controller is also available, and the unit has a separate SMART port for it. The SMART Follow mode uses an additional temperature sensor built into the remote or the controller, so the unit reacts to the temperature where you actually are, not only next to the unit under the ceiling.

The manufacturer describes the SMART Wi-Fi function: with a Wi-Fi modem the unit can be controlled with a smartphone or tablet, at home and away. App control is therefore possible, but we do not assume in advance that the module comes in the box. We discuss the connectivity set-up during the quotation and configure it during installation. The manufacturer also notes that the air humidity sensor is available from the mobile app.

For everyday convenience there is a timer for setting switch-on and switch-off times, an auto-restart memory that restores the last settings after a brief power cut, and the option to switch off the display on the panel. The SMART 8°C heating function starts heating by itself so that the temperature in an empty room does not fall below 8°C, which helps in a holiday cottage or an unused room. The manufacturer states that this function is unavailable in a Multi Split system. Self-diagnosis shows an error message on the display, which speeds up fault finding at service.

Design and build

The Rotenso Versu Cloth Caramel has a textile, replaceable front panel. The manufacturer states that the panel comes in nine colours and can be matched to the room at any time. This unit is the version named Caramel, so before ordering it is worth seeing a fabric sample in person and judging it under your own lighting. Fabric gives a different effect from glossy plastic: it is matte, warm to the eye and works well with wood, linen and bedroom or living room textiles.

Structurally the unit is the same machine as the Mirror version of this series: it is 920 mm wide, 211 mm deep and 321 mm high, and weighs 11.3 kg. The difference lies in the front and finish, not in operating parameters. A replaceable panel means that after a few years, when you redo the interior, you can change the colour of the front without replacing the whole air conditioner. For cleaning the fabric, a vacuum cleaner with a soft attachment is best, rather than water and detergents.

The build also includes technical solutions hidden under the casing. Condensate drainage is two-sided, so the hose can be routed to the left or to the right, which makes planning the route in a narrow hallway easier. The heat exchangers of the indoor and outdoor units are covered with an anticorrosive gold-coloured fin coating. The manufacturer describes it as a coating with self-cleaning properties that protects against corrosion and limits bacterial growth, but it does not replace regular filter cleaning and service checks. The heating operating range extends from -25°C to 30°C outdoor temperature, and the cooling range from -15°C to 50°C.

Installation and service

We quote the installed price after a free assessment, and we agree the scope at a free audit. Standard installation covers: mounting the indoor and outdoor units, up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate routes, a wall passage with neat routing of the installation, vacuum evacuation and a leak check of the system, charging with refrigerant and starting the unit, checking operating parameters with control configuration, and a walkthrough of operation with the warranty documents handed over.

Possible surcharges are discussed before work begins. They concern a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, wall chasing, a condensate pump and work from a lift platform. The maximum installation length for this model is 25 m, though most Warsaw flats fit within a far shorter route. With an indoor unit weighing 11.3 kg, the wall it is to hang on should have suitable load capacity, which we assess on site.

After installation the user looks after the filters: taking them out and cleaning them as described in the manual, usually every few weeks in the season of intensive use. Once a year it is worth ordering a service visit that includes cleaning the heat exchanger and checking condensate flow and the tightness of the system. When heating, it also helps to keep the outdoor unit free of leaves and snow. The winter package then works in the conditions it was designed for.

Who this model is for — summary

Choose this model if you want a textile front that can be replaced later and a quiet inverter unit. In the Caramel version the manufacturer states heating operation down to -25°C, the same as the Versu Mirror. Parameters common to the whole variant are SEER 8.5 (A+++), SCOP 4.6 (A++), indoor unit noise of 19 to 40 dB, outdoor unit noise of 53 dB, and a nominal output of 3.5 kW in cooling and 3.8 kW in heating. The model is meant for a flat or room where quiet operation and a matching look both count.

It is not the best choice if you are looking for the cheapest solution for a garage or storeroom, because a good part of the value of this air conditioner lies in its finish and comfort functions. Nor should you choose it only for the declared heating range at low temperatures if the building is poorly insulated: real comfort then depends on insulation and on matching the output to the room.

If you are considering this model, write or call LeoKlima. We will arrange a free audit in Warsaw, measure the installation route, check the place for the outdoor unit and discuss possible surcharges.
