The Samsung WindFree Avant S2 Black is the black version of a wall-mounted air conditioner in which the key point is not power but the way air is distributed. The manufacturer describes WindFree technology: cooling without a direct blast of cold air. The air is dispersed through thousands of micro-perforations in the panel and forms what is called still air, with a speed below 0.15 m/s by the ASHRAE definition. For that reason the manufacturer points to the bedroom and the child's room as natural places to use it. Such operation makes particular sense in small flats, where the bed often stands close to the wall with the unit and a stream from a conventional unit is hard to avoid.

The numbers are good, but they are not the main argument here. Nominal cooling output is 3.5 kW, heating 4.0 kW, and seasonal efficiency is SEER 8.6 (class A+++) and SCOP 4.8 (class A++). The indoor unit runs at a sound level from 16 to 40 dB and the outdoor unit at 46 dB. The unit codes are AR70F12C1ABNEU and AR70F12C1AWXEU. The outdoor unit is the same as in the white version; only the colour of the indoor unit differs. The manufacturer's page also lists Fast Cooling, Good Sleep and Eco modes, and an automatic restart after a power cut, which is handy in a block where short outages happen.

On top of that comes a set of functions: three cooling stages, a Dry Comfort mode with a humidity sensor, control through the SmartThings app and by voice via Bixby, and three-stage filtration with a zeolite coating. We choose the mounting place and pipe route for your room. We quote the installed price after a free assessment, so we first look at the wall and the place for the outdoor unit. The indoor unit weighs 9.9 kg and measures 889 × 299 × 215 mm. The maximum installation length is 20 m.

Overview and positioning

The WindFree Avant S2 Black is for people who dislike air conditioning because of the stream of cold air. Instead of aiming a wind at the occupants, the unit releases air through a micro-perforated panel. The manufacturer stresses that this approach suits a bedroom and a child's room, because there is no marked draught. That premise is the core of this model and the yardstick against which it should be judged. In practice, choosing this air conditioner means choosing a gentle way of working: you should feel the room temperature, not air moving past your face. That holds both at night and when working from home at a desk close to the wall.

At the same time, it is not a lesser unit than conventional ones in other respects. It has an inverter compressor, a wide operating temperature range, a very quiet mode and extensive filtration. On the other hand, comfort without a draught means the air spreads more gently, so in a very hot room the quick-cooling task is handled by the Fast Cooling mode, which the manufacturer lists separately. If someone in the household is sensitive to draughts, such as a small child or an older person, this design removes the main reason people give up on air conditioning.

In this catalogue we position the model as a choice for a flat where sleep and calm count more than the sheer force of the airflow. For comparison with other units we show the model's own figures rather than head-to-head tables with named competitors, because we have no such data in the manufacturer's source. The black version complements the range for those who prefer a dark wall or a discreet graphite-coloured body.

Cooling and heating technology

The heart of the system is a Digital Inverter Boost compressor of the Twin Rotary type, with Triple Protector Plus protection against power surges, and a BLDC motor drives the fan directly. For the user this means smooth power adjustment instead of constant on-off cycles. Nominal cooling output is 3.5 kW and the maximum 4.6 kW. In heating the nominal output is 4.0 kW, with a modulation range from 0.7 to 7.2 kW. It is worth noting that the surge protection matters because power surges are not rare in older electrical installations, so in an older building it is an extra technical advantage.

Seasonal efficiency, that is SEER 8.6 in cooling (A+++) and SCOP 4.8 in heating (A++), places the model high on the class scale. The outdoor temperature range is from -10°C to 46°C in cooling and from -15°C to 24°C in heating. In Warsaw this means the unit will heat during typical autumn and early-spring cold, but the manufacturer's range ends at -15°C, so in harder frost we do not promise heating operation. We always check such ranges against the conditions at the installation site, because on a north-facing outer wall the temperature near the unit can be lower than the forecast.

The manufacturer describes three cooling stages: Fast Cooling, Dehumidification and WindFree cooling. Further modes are Good Sleep, Eco, Fan, Quiet, Auto Changeover and Auto Restart. The refrigerant is R32. The maximum installation length is 20 m, which leaves some margin even in a flat where the outdoor unit is far from the indoor one. Auto Changeover switches between cooling and heating by itself, which is convenient in spring and autumn when the temperature swings widely during the day.

Comfort and air quality

Quiet is what matters most for comfort. According to the manufacturer the indoor unit runs from 16 to 40 dB. Added to that is a gentle, diffused airflow without a direct stream, so at night there is neither noise nor draught. The outdoor unit runs at 46 dB, which is worth considering when choosing a spot below a neighbour's bedroom window. For many people it is precisely the combination of quiet operation and no direct stream that makes them choose this model for a child's room.

The new Dry Comfort mode with a humidity sensor dries the air with little effect on the room temperature. This is useful on hot, humid days when a cold stream is not needed and you only want to reduce humidity. The Auto Clean function prevents moisture inside the unit, and Freeze Wash freezes the heat exchanger, removes frost together with dirt and microorganisms, and dries the exchanger.

Filtration relies on the Tri-Care Filter system with a zeolite coating and the Easy Filter Plus filter, which is easy to clean. Even so, the filter needs regular checks and the whole installation should be serviced once a year. The cleaning functions described by the manufacturer reduce the risk of moisture inside the unit, but they do not replace a service visit or washing the filters. It is good practice to clean the filter more often during the spring pollen season and in flats near busy streets.

Controls and Wi-Fi

The manufacturer describes Wi-Fi control through the Samsung SmartThings app and Bixby voice control. This lets you switch the unit on or off from a smartphone and change settings, and at home use a voice command. All you need is a stable network signal where the unit is installed, which we check during the site visit. If you already use Samsung devices, the app integration will feel natural, but it is not a condition of using the air conditioner, because the unit can also be operated with the remote.

The AI Auto Comfort function analyses the conditions in the room and the usage history and chooses the settings itself. Welcome Cooling switches the air conditioner on when you approach home, and Away Mode switches it off remotely if you forgot to do so before leaving. Both solutions are convenient, but they need a connection to the app, so how they work depends on the setup on your phone.

A remote with a SolarCell solar cell is included. The unit's display shows the room temperature and can be switched off, which is useful in a bedroom. During commissioning we configure the controls and show how to pair the air conditioner with the app. If you plan to use voice control, let us know before installation and we will check that the configuration is complete.

Design and build

The indoor unit casing is black, which the manufacturer states in the description of the S2 Black version. The outdoor unit is the same as in the white version, so black is only the part visible inside. The indoor unit measures 889 × 299 × 215 mm and weighs 9.9 kg. That is a fairly compact body for a unit with such extensive technology. The depth of 215 mm means the unit does not protrude far from the wall.

A distinctive element of the look is the panel with micro-perforations, through which air passes in WindFree mode. For colour we stick to the manufacturer's information, that is a black casing. We do not add finish details that are absent from the description.

A well-planned installation has a big effect on how the interior reads. We hang the unit on the room's axis, keeping clearances from the ceiling and walls, and route pipes and cables tidily. With a dark casing it is worth matching the colour of the cover strip to the wall, which we discuss before the work. That way the unit blends into the wall instead of drawing attention with a tangle of cables.

Installation and service

Installation covers mounting the indoor and outdoor units and running up to a few metres of refrigerant, electrical and condensate lines. We make the wall penetration and route the installation neatly, evacuate the system and check it for leaks, charge it with refrigerant and start the unit. The manufacturer allows an installation length of up to 20 m, but the scope in your flat is set at the free assessment. During the site visit we also point out where the condensate is best routed.

After start-up we check the operating parameters and configure the controls, including the connection to the SmartThings app. At the end we give an operating briefing and hand over the warranty documents. We also show how to remove and wash the Easy Filter Plus and when to plan a service visit. We show how to check that the condensate drain is clear.

Possible surcharges, discussed before the work, are a longer route, drilling through concrete or reinforced concrete, chasing, a condensate pump and work from a lift platform. We quote the installed price after a free assessment. After the season we recommend a service visit, filter cleaning and a check of the condensate drain. Surcharges are discussed after the audit, so there are no surprises on installation day.

Who this model is for — summary

Choose the Samsung WindFree Avant S2 Black 3.5 kW if what bothers you most is a stream of cold air and noise at night. It is a sensible choice for a bedroom and a child's room, as the manufacturer itself says, and a level of 16 dB in quiet mode completes that picture. A SEER of 8.6 and a SCOP of 4.8 also speak for it when it is used often through the whole year. It also suits people who work from home and need quiet to concentrate.

Choose it too if you value control by app and voice and the heat-exchanger cleaning functions, which reduce moisture inside the unit. The black casing suits dark interiors and walls in contrasting colours, and the outdoor unit stays the same as in the white version. All of it is packed in one compact casing 889 mm wide.

If all you want is the fastest and strongest cooling, let us talk about the needs of the room, because the gentle airflow is a deliberate compromise. Book a free assessment: we will look at the wall and the pipe route and quote the installed price. We will also answer questions about the place for the outdoor unit and possible surcharges. Such a conversation usually takes a dozen or so minutes.
